    Hi Rose,

The Knowledge and Thinking Rubrics that exist at the secondary level, are disciplinary literacy rubrics that encompass the reading and writing skills particular to a discipline. For example, the rubrics help assess students who are writing like a scientist or historian or doing literary analysis.  We normally don't start focusing on disciplinary literacy skills in Elementary grade levels.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Noemi!

What grade level do you teach?  The Elementary rubrics have a student facing rubric for students to use for self evaluation.  The Secondary Rubrics (MS/HS) can be used for self evaluation and we encourage that you do!  The Secondary students may need scaffolding to understand the language so helping them to get comfortable with the rubrics through rubric workshops is helpful.  Some teachers even include a blank row below each row of their rubrics and work with students to find student friendly language to help them understand what the rubrics are measuring.  But we encourage all teachers to use the rubrics with students so that they can self evaluate their skill level.  Using the Bookend Lesson Card in the NTN Assessment Practices Card Deck can help students learn portions of the rubrics, set goals and reflect on their progress all in one class period.  You could start there!
